A whole new world...

Lily is doing just super with her new glasses.  She doesn't try to take them off, and she is constantly watching use now.  Her naps changed and I finally realized it was because she is getting adjusted to her new specs.  Seeing the world makes her not want to sleep!  But its been a week and she is napping great again.  I'm just so glad on how much better she sees!

She is so cute in her Sunday dress!  She is constantly watching everything, including TV, which we aren't too thrilled about.  But hey, the girl can see and that's what matters.  It seems her eyes are straightening out already, so that is great.  In a few months, we go back to our pediatric ophthalmologist for a check up.  We'll know more then but so far so good!

We are going to sign her up for Karate...

Our little nerd is born!  We will need Karate lessons... to fend off all the little boys!  Lily's glasses came in today and she is so stinking cute I can hardly stand it!

Its a whole new world for her!  She doesn't mind having them on at all, and she is looking around so much more.  I know she can see further because I had her in her carseat and I was standing a few feet away and I smiled at her.  She smiled back!  But it gets even cuter:

She has transition lenses!  When they are completely dark, she looks like an incognito movie star!  It was in the shade in the picture so they didn't get dark enough.  The makings of a diva perhaps?

Nerd or diva?  Now that will be the question!

Snow Day(s)

Monday, we woke up to this:

Usually the road doesn't get covered but there was so much snow it did!  We got about 5-6 inches.  We made it outside in early afternoon, but it was so cold that the snow was no longer fluffy but crunchy.  Not that much fun.  But Lily liked her little polar bear outfit.  Thanks Sheena!

I made her the little hat she is wearing under the hood.  I'm feeling crafty.  Two snowfalls in one year for South Carolina.  It shut the city down.  Schools were closed basically all week since most kids had off Friday for Martin Luther King Jr. day. I was kind of mocking the wussies but I went out Wednesday afternoon for a Bible study and Big Red got stuck in my friends' driveway.  I kept spinning my wheels until the girls sat in the bed of the truck so the wheels could get traction.  VERY embarrassing so I figured if they want to cancel school, more power to them.  And on the way home, I pulled in the driveway and stopped to let the garage door open.  Well, there was a patch of ice and I couldn't pull the rest of the way in!  Finally, I backed/slid down the driveway, and got a running start to get in the garage.  I can't handle the snow apparently.  It is embarrassing.

So this week we tried a little naked tummy time.  Lily loved it, of course!  Her little bottom got to get some air.  We are working on her rolling over - she hasn't yet but we wanted to make sure it wasn't because of the bulky diaper.  I got some cute pictures, but I'm not going to post my baby's hiney on the internet... well, not now at least.  But this is one of my favorite pictures of her so far.

Her eyes have turned.  She is our brown eyed girl!

First feeding

About a week ago, we gave Lily rice cereal for the first time.

She is doing better keeping the food in her mouth, although that tongue of hers is constantly in the way.  She has Jason's tongue for sure; we compared and she has a cleft tongue (or a butt tongue) and so does Jay.  I have no cleft in mine.  At least its not a forked tongue!  But she really enjoys eating.  Today she was laughing and squealing while I was feeding her.  Next, I think we are going to try butternut squash.  I made a bunch of squash and carrots so we'll see which we start with.  I'm ready to give her apples though.  From what I understand, they help "move things along" if you know what I mean.

I just can't believe my baby is growing up!  But she is so much more fun now than she has been before.  This is a great age - she loves to play and talk, but doesn't roll or run.  I'm totally enjoying this because all too soon it will be over and onto something new!

Preview of Lily's Glasses

It will be about 3 weeks to get Lily's glasses, but here she is with the nonprescription lenses.  Cute, right??

Lily's Pediatric Ophthalmologist Visit

At Lily's four month check up, we talked to our doctor about her eyes still crossing kind of often.  Because I was worried, our pediatrician referred us to a pediatric ophthalmologist to check her out.  We finally got in yesterday and got her diagnosis.

Well, since both eyes cross, he first said surgery.  Generally they recommend waiting until the kid is about a year old and then they will fix it.  He ruled out a patch, because both eyes are crossing so its not a "lazy" eye issue.  He also ruled out glasses because glasses generally help correct the cross eyes because of vision problems.  Lily is too young (5 1/2 months) to have a vision problem, that usually turns up at about 2 years old.  He said he would check her vision first just to make sure.

Our doctor is really funny too.  I told him I didn't know how he did it, checking people's eyes who cannot speak and let you know what's wrong.  He said people compare him to a vet.  I thought that was pretty accurate. I also told him we were hoping that if Lily WAS blind, that her other senses would be heightened, and he said, "Like Ben Affleck in Daredevil?" I knew I liked him.  Google Daredevil if need to.

So after her eyes were dilated, he started his exam.  Lily was really pretty good, considering she had been up way to long and was used to napping at this time.  Then the doc asked if she was advanced in her milestones.  Jay and I looked at each other.  We always discuss how Lily is like a week behind her "milestones." So I told him that, and our pedi isn't concerned but has never called Lily advanced.  Average, I'd say, maybe a little late. So this doc said she may be advanced in one respect.

Turns out she can see and does have a vision problem.  She actually has the same far-sightedness that Jason has!  He said he has never seen this in a case so young.  According to him, the literature says this can happen as early as 6 months, but this is the earliest case he has ever seen.  (He ain't a young man either.) So, I guess she is advanced in this way!  He asked if we would be open to trying glasses and we agreed.  The cool thing was the doctor put the corrective lenses up to her eyes and they straightened out and she seemed surprised to see. I asked if this would affect her future vision and he said its hard to tell.  But Jay got glasses in first grade and I did in high school so she probably will anyway.

So baby glasses it is.  A beginning start on Nerdom maybe?  But the glasses are adorable.  We saw 2 pairs. One pair is soft flexible plastic that has the strap that goes around her head.  We decided not to get that type or else she will look like she is wearing basketball goggles all the time.  We went to a place with more selection and are looking at getting a traditional pair that hook to her ears.

We put some on to try and of course she looks so cute.  We are waiting on getting some glasses to get her fitted, but there will be plenty of pictures.  She will be so cute!!
